95A re-opened after slide in Kimberley

Highway 95A through the City of Kimberley was closed for the morning hours earlier today and last night after a slide closed the roadway (Wallinger Ave.) just up from the Overwaitea.

The slide occurred last night (May 16) at about 9:30 p.m., with a pair of British tourists almost in the middle of it, reported Kimberley Chamber of Commerce executive director Sioban Staplin. The woman driver managed to stop in time before driving into the sloughed debris, caused by a surging underground spring, and was able to quickly reverse before more debris pounded down onto the roadway.

City crews were already working at the site before the slide, diverting water that was making its way from out of the hillside, when the slide took place.

Highway 95A was re-opened at mid-day after city crews finished clearing away the mud, rock and trees.
