Access restriction lifted; fire 10% contained
The Cherry Lake wildfire 35 km south of Cranbrook did not grow overnight and is now 10% contained, reports the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).
Discovered August 25, the lightning-caused fire grew to 1,250.0 hectares (estimated) by Aug. 29.
Considered a ‘fire of note’ within the Southeast Fire Centre, there are 53 firefighters, eight helicopters and 12 pieces of heavy equipment fighting the blaze.
“This fire has seen 12 mm of precipitation so far, which has helped with fire suppression activities,” the BCWS reported earlier this morning. This fire is not threatening any structures or communities.
The public access restriction for the Caven, Wickman, Larch, Bloom, Teepee and Teepee / Jim Creek Forest Service Road has be lifted. These roads are now open to the public.
BCWS also reports a small fire began near Mayook August 30. It is listed at .009 ha in size. There is an equal sized fire reported today south of Sparwood off Leech FSR.
