Canal Flats man killed in crash

A 79-year-old Canal Flats man is dead following an afternoon crash on Highway 93/95 north of the village yesterday.

At 4:45 p.m., Oct. 21, Columbia Valley RCMP along with Fire Emergency and BC Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle accident involving a 2014 Volvo Commercial Vehicle, driven by a 41-year-old male from Abbotsford hauling lumber and a 2008 GMC Sierra driven by a 79-year-old male from Canal Flats.

The 2008 GMC Sierra was travelling southbound on Hwy 93/95, four km north of Canal Flats when it was observed by witnesses to enter the northbound lane colliding with the semi.

The 79-year-old driver of the GMC died as a result of his injuries while being transported to East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The driver of the semi was also taken to hospital in Cranbrook with non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 93/95 was closed for more than two hours while police investigated the crash.

Columbia Valley Detachment is being assisted by a RCMP Traffic Analyst from Cranbrook and is continuing with the investigation assisting the BC Coroner’s office.
