City and Habitat for Humanity partnering on new project

Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC is moving forward with a new affordable housing project in Cranbrook.

City of Cranbrook council last night approved the donation of a city-owned parcel at 2600-4th Street South. The land is to be used for the construction of a Habitat for Humanity side-by-side duplex, with each unit featuring three bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms, and an unfinished basement—providing space for future growth.

In May 2025, council granted Habitat For Humanity’s request to prepare a proposal for a potential residential housing project, which would require site investigations and review to ensure this site would be suitable.

Habitat for Humanity has notified the city that they have completed their process, and this location would be a good fit for this proposed project and meets their overall mission to serve working families with dependent children.

“This project builds on a successful partnership between the city and Habitat back in 2014, when land was provided for a home in Slaterville. With affordable housing continuing to be a key need in Cranbrook, we as a council are committed to addressing local housing challenges which aligns with our Housing Strategy and our strategic priorities,” said Mayor Wayne Price.

“A big thank you to Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC for reaching out about this opportunity and providing much needed housing to local families. We look forward to seeing this partnership continue to grow.”

Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC brings people together to help families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership. Partner families help build their homes and purchase them through no-down-payment, income-geared mortgages—giving them a real and lasting opportunity to thrive.

City staff have been working closely with Habitat since fall 2024 to explore this opportunity and will continue supporting the project as it moves ahead.

More updates will be shared as the work progresses.
