City moving ahead with more 14th Avenue repairs

Another section of 14th Avenue is going to be resurfaced by the City of Cranbrook.

City council August 15 unanimously agreed to channel $800,000 from its $4.2 million surplus fund to its roads program, in order to re-pave the bottom of the hill section of 14th Ave., from 10th Street up to 12A Street.

City engineer Jamie Hodge told council the work on the sloped roadway would be done in two phases and should cost about $1 million, excluding HST.

The figure startled Mayor Scott Manjak, who asked if the $800,000 from the accumulated surplus fund would be channeled into that lone project or could be used for others on the city’s lengthy roads priority list.

“Fourteenth would be the only project,” Hodges replied.

“This is a good start to addressing that storm water management up there,” Manjak noted.

Coun. Bob Whetham said he finds the extra road work being done “encouraging.”

City staff will also investigate the possibility of being able to utilize development cost charge (DCC) funds for some of the work on the roadway.

Using $800,000 from the surplus fund will leave about $3.4 million in the account, reported city chief administrative officer Will Pearce.
