City opens door for Bulk Barn
Tamarack Mall will be welcoming a new tenant soon, as City of Cranbrook council last night (March 19) approved a Commercial Façade Development Permit to allow for exterior renovations to a portion of the mall.
In a report to council, community planner Rob Price explained the application for façade renovations “is in connection with a planned utilization of existing vacant mall space for the ‘Bulk Barn,’ which is described as a Canadian bulk food retailer.”
The 6,000-square-foot space is not connected to the mall interior and access will be from the front parking lot, beside Winners.
“The applicant indicates that the store front will utilize black anodized aluminum framing in keeping with the overall esthetic of the mall,” Price reported, adding the space to be occupied has been “vacant for years.”
Council unanimously approved the development permit application made by Abbarch Architecture Inc., on behalf of Bentall Retail Services (Pellex Holdings Ltd.), though Coun. Gerry Warner suggested he thought the mall would be better served if the new business had an interior access, as well.
“This sounds wonderful except this business of not being connected to the mall,” he said.
While noting she was supporting the addition to the city of a competing business for her own business (Nutters), Coun. Denise Pallesen noted, “I don’t think we have a say in this.”
Mayor Wayne Stetski added, “It’s good to see another business come into Cranbrook.”
