City recruiting volunteers for advisory committees

There are several opportunities for public participation and involvement in the City of Cranbrook advisory committees listed below.

Membership is open to residents of the City of Cranbrook.

Advisory Planning Commission

The Advisory Planning Commission advises Council on matters respecting land use, community planning or proposed bylaws and permits. Four positions are available.

Board of Variance

The Board of Variance is an independent body formed pursuant to the provisions of Section 899 of the Local Government Act. The Board considers requests for minor variances to the City of Cranbrook’s Zoning Bylaw regarding the siting, size and dimensions of buildings. The Board considers whether compliance with zoning regulations would create undue hardship resulting from aspects of the site as opposed to those that are personal to, or generated by, the property owner. Two positions are available.

Cranbrook in Motion

The Cranbrook in Motion Committee was formed to examine transportation planning and policy issues facing the city. There is a significant relationship between transportation, land use, social needs, traffic safety, parking and the environment. The committee will examine these connections, in the context of both short term and long term planning, and provide recommendations to city council for all modes of local mobility.

One position is available.

Cranbrook Public Library Board

Members of the Library Board form a corporation with the powers and duties given under the Library Act. The Board Applicant Process and information package is available at the Library or at www.cranbrook.ca.

Three positions are available.

Family and Community Services

The Family and Community Services Committee provides advice to council on issues of importance to senior, youth, homeless people and physically challenged. The objective of the committee is to provide information and insight on creating a livable, diverse and inclusive community. One position is available.

Key City Theatre Society

The City of Cranbrook appoints two of the nine directors of the Key City Theatre Society. City appointed directors will be expected to provide regular reports to Cranbrook City Council on the operations of the Key City Theatre Society. Two positions are available.

On Dec. 8, City of Cranbrook council approved the appointments of elected officials to the city committees.

Councillor Wes Graham and Coun. Ron Popoff will serve as non-voting members of the Advisory Planning Commission.

Coun. Tom Shypitka and Coun. Isaac Hockley will serve on the Cranbrook in Motion Committee.

Coun. Norma Blissett will serve on the Cranbrook Public Library Board.

Coun. Danielle Cardozo and Coun. Popoff will serve on the Family and Community Services Committee.

Coun. Isaac Hockley and Coun. Wes Graham will serve on the Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee.

Coun. Cardozo will serve on the Wellness and Heritage Committee.

Mayor Lee Pratt will serve as chair of the Personnel Committee (Committee of the Whole).

Coun. Blissett will serve on the Cranbrook Archives, Museum & Landmark Foundation.

Mayor Pratt will the council representative on the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce.

Coun. Popoff will serve on the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treaty Advisory Committee.

Mayor Pratt and Coun. Tom Shypitka will represent the city as directors on the Regional District of East Kootenav Board and Kootenay East Regional Hospital District Board. Councillors Graham and Popoff will serve as alternative directors.

The same four elected officials will represent the city on the East Kootenay Hospital Board.
