Columbia Valley dodges long weekend shenanigans
Columbia Valley RCMP Report
The Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment responded to 46 calls for service over the May long weekend.
“Many were minor in nature. We are pleased to report that there were no major incidents or serious accidents,” stated S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac.
Assault complaint
Columbia Valley Detachment members responded to a complaint of assault in the 800 block of Lakeview Meadows at 1:30 p.m. on May 18. An 18-year-old male attended a house party and was assaulted by two other males at the party. The victim received a cut lip and minor bruises. The identity of the two males is being determined and the investigation is continuing.
Sudden death
Columbia Valley Detachment members were called to a sudden death in the 5100 block of Riverview Gate Road in Fairmont at 6 a.m. on May 19. It was determined that an 85-year-old male from Lethbridge, with numerous medical issues, died of natural causes.
Distraught male helped
Columbia Valley Detachment members responded to the area of Riverside Golf course on May 19 in regards to a 20-year-old male in a distraught condition. The male was taken to Invermere & District Hospital for assistance.
Fighters disappear before police arrive
A detachment member responded to a complaint of two males fighting near Home Hardware at 3:45 p.m. on May 19. Witnesses observed two males from the same vehicle argue then get into a physical confrontation. The car and males had departed by the time police arrived. Patrols for the vehicle were negative.
Disturbance dissipates before police arrive
Police received a report of a disturbance between two males in the area of the Terra Vista in Windermere at 5:45 p.m. on May 19. One male identified as the aggressor by a witness had departed the area before police arrived.
Quad driver can expect visit from RCMP
Also on May 19, Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of a quad running around on the roads in Windermere in a dangerous manner. Police located the quad. The driver failed to stop for the police vehicle. A good description was obtained of the quad and the driver. The residence for the owner was located and the quad was located.
The driver was identified to the police as a local 35-year-old male. Police will be paying this male a visit when located.
Driving complain in Windermere
Columbia Valley Detachment members attended to a driving complaint in the Shadybrook Campground in Windermere at 12:05 a.m. on May 20. A 19-year-old male from Calgary was issued a 24 hour driving suspension.
Unlocked vehicle plundered in Fairmont
Columbia Valley Detachment members May 20 received a complaint of theft of a purse from an unlocked vehicle in the Hoodoos camp site. Cash and credit cards were stolen.
Vehicle impounded
A 57-year-old male from Invermere was charged May 20 with excessive speeding in a 70 km/h zone. A 2012 Dodge pickup was impounded for seven days as a result of the excessive speeding charge.
A wedding to remember
While stationed in the Lower Mainland way back, we had a young fellow who we got to know quite well due to his criminal behavior.
Not a friendly fellow. One of his charges resulted in a warrant for his arrest. He left the area and disappeared for a considerable amount of time. However, he did come back for his sisters’ wedding. See where this is going eh. Just to show we are not that heartless, he was stopped the evening before the wedding while he was en route to a family gathering. The warrant was one that we should not be releasing him. However, the officer who dealt with him showed compassion and this male agreed that if the officer let him continue on to the family outing he would show up before the wedding to receive some documents. Did he show up the next day? No.
Compassion now goes out the window. We knew that after the wedding the chances of seeing him again would slip and we continued to look for him. We also knew from a conversation the night before he was in the wedding party. So, off to the church the officers go. They don’t interrupt the blessed event but once church was over and they came out the arrest is made and, tuxedo and all, into the cells with him.
When I arrived for work I could hear a disturbance in the lobby of the police station and some girl in a wedding dress was losing it on our supervisor. When told of the events I thought that the least we could do was have the reception in the cell block. After a large deposit of money was put down to guarantee his appearance in court the male was released into the custody of one ticked off bride.
