Community association battling invasive plants
One of the Meadowbrook Community Association’s Strategic Priorities is ‘combatting invasive plants in the Meadowbrook and Woods Corner areas.’
Last year it began action on the initiative by organizing a workshop on invasive plants.
In each of the past two years, the MCA has:
- Made a submission on the issue to the Provincial Government Select Standing Committee on Budget and Government Operations;
- Helped provincial officials to prioritize the treatment of problem areas along highways and on provincial lands;
- Assisted property owners wishing to treat weeds on their property to access the funding assistance available through the Regional District of East Kootenay.
This year it applied for and received a Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Grant. These funds enabled it to mail detailed information on invasive plants to residents of Meadowbrook and Woods Corner and to non-resident members.
This spring the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council organized a Pesticide Application Certification course. One Woods Corner resident, Garland Joe, and one Meadowbrook resident, Teagan Jarrett, enrolled in the program. The CBT funds enabled the MCA to subsidize the cost for the two residents.
