Just after 1 a.m. on September 3, a local resident was traveling down Theatre Road when they noted a vehicle on fire in a locked compound. The witness contacted the fire department that in turn contacted police.

The vehicle that was burning was a marked police vehicle belonging to the Cranbrook RCMP Detachment and had been left at the business for repairs. Police are investigating the incident and have confirmed this to be arson.

“This is most definitely a targeted arson against the local police,” stated S/Sgt. Dave Dubnyk. “The unfortunate part is this isn’t just an attack against the police but affects local residents as vehicles and other police assets are purchased with public funds,” he added.

Police are following up on leads and encourage anyone with information to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1(800) 222-TIPS (8477).
