District hosting two town halls on climate change
Fires, floods, ice and storms – our weather continues to change and oftentimes those changes can have staggering impacts on communities.
The District of Sparwood recognizes this and is continuing in its efforts to make itself and its residents more aware of what is happening and what can be done to be prepared.
With that in mind, the district is hosting two community engagement initiatives on Dec. 7 and 8.
Nature changes; we adapt.
This is the theme of our upcoming community engagement initiative to help District of Sparwood residents and business owners understand the challenges of climate change and the actions we need to take to protect property and promote safety.
• Hear from climate change experts;
• Learn how the District of Sparwood is adapting;
• Collect tips on how you can help protect lives and property;
• Share your input and enter to win prizes.

“We will be focusing on the four key areas identified at a first Climate Adaptation Scanning and Planning Workshop last fall. They are interface fire risks, flood prevention, extreme weather impacts and preserving water supply,” noted District of Sparwood Mayor Lois Halko.
We are very pleased to have Mel Reisner, an expert in climate science and Hans Schrier, a hydrologist with expertise in water supply, storms, flooding and water conservation, as guest speakers. There will be information stations with subject matter experts from the district, as well as door prizes for participants, stated a district event invitation.
“These town halls are another big step towards engaging our community in discussions about how climate change affects us and what we need to do as a community to be prepared,” Halko said.
Please join us: Friday, December 7, 6 – 8 p.m. Presentation at 6:15 p.m.
Saturday, December 8, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Presentation at 10:15 a.m. At Sparwood Senior Citizen’s Drop-In Centre, 101 – 4 Avenue (Next to Lilac Terrace).
