Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services (CFES) responded to a fast moving grass fire Wednesday afternoon, (March 27) threatening nearby Gold Creek area homes.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene of the out-of-control grass fire, below the Gold Creek Store in Regional District of East Kootenay Electoral Area C.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services responded with six members and three apparatus, including the bush truck.

A resident was burning off grass on a lot in light winds in the morning, when the wind quickly strengthened driving the flames across three lots, threatening some homes and sheds in the area. The fire totaled approximately five hectares in size and resulted in minimal property loss.

Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that burning of yard and garden waste within the City of Cranbrook limits is prohibited.

Residents in Area C are reminded to exercise caution when doing any burning. Conditions this early in the spring are already very dry and with the Easter long weekend upon us and the weather expected to be warm and dry, residents will be busy with their spring clean-up activities.
