Elkford Community Conference Centre receives recognition at UBCM

The District of Elkford’s new Community Conference Centre received praise at the 2012 Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Annual Convention in Victoria this week.

On Wednesday, September 26 Mayor Dean McKerracher accepted a Community Recognition Award on behalf of the District of Elkford from Wood WORKS! BC for the use of wood in the construction of the Elkford Community Conference Centre. Elkford was recognized for demonstrating leadership and vision by embracing wood innovation. Wood WORKS! is a national industry-led initiative of the Canadian Wood Council, with a goal to support innovation and provide leadership on the use of wood and wood products.
On Thursday, September 27 the district was awarded the 2012 UBCM Community Excellence Award, Small Community, Leadership and Innovation in recognition of the new Elkford Community Conference Centre, as the building addresses environmental concerns and regulatory requirements.

The Community Excellence Awards program is an opportunity to showcase municipalities and regional districts who “lead the pack”, take risks to innovate, establish new partnerships, question established ways of doing business and pioneer new customer service practices.
About the Elkford Community Conference Centre
The $6.4 million energy-efficient Community Conference Centre is constructed of structural wood and conserves maximum energy and reduces the Centre’s environmental footprint. The 1,800-square-metre building features a Visitor Centre, playschool, commercial kitchen, banquet hall with a stage for the performing arts, multi-purpose meeting rooms as well as historical displays. The building is being widely recognized for its innovative use of wood products, as it is the first commercial application of Cross Laminated Timbers (CLT) wall panels in North America. The building opened in June of 2012 and is a spectacular addition to the community.
