At 4:30 p.m. on August 9, two motorcycles and their drivers fell victim to one deer in the area of Highway 93/95 near Windermere Loop Road.
One male from Edmonton, age 52, operating a 2007 Suzuki, hit a deer and laid down his bike. A second motorcycle operator, age 51, also from Edmonton, operating a 92 Yamaha, made contact with the deer and also went down. No severe injuries sustained.
Car love draws youth too far in
Four young youths were reported August 9 to be in a garage in the Athalmer area. The owner, not realizing what the youths were up to, contacted the police stating the youths were presently with the owner and would wait for police arrival. It was determined from speaking to the youths that they were admiring an older car in the garage and went in for a closer look. Youths were co-operative throughout their dealing with the police. All advised the best course of action is to speak to the owners first.

Intoxicated Calgarian charged
Columbia Valley Detachment members were called to a disturbance at a residence on Pine tree Rd in Invermere at 9:50 p.m. on August 12.
A 23-year-old male, a member of the residence visiting from Calgary, was found to be highly intoxicated and causing a disturbance to the point the police were called to prevent things from escalating. Unfortunately, the behaviour of the male confronting the police resulted in an arrest. The male has been charged with obstruction and will appear in Invermere Provincial court in November.
Boat and backcountry patrols
Boat patrol. The police boat was on the water last weekend. A number of boats were checked for compliance. A group of youths were checked and warned about fishing licences and then advised that there were no fish in the lake.
Back Country Patrols: Columbia Valley Detachment member attended with Kootenay National Park (KNP) Wardens on a four-day patrol.
Cst. Harper, an active outdoors person who enjoys exploring the backcountry, took advantage of using up summer seasonal patrols and accompanied the Park Warden in KNP to check on issues surrounding the Federal Contravention Act. This Act is seldom used by the police but very much used by the Park Wardens. Seven violation tickets were issued for camping without a permit. A number of backcountry people were checked and all appreciated the fact the warden and police were present in the backcountry.
Man up
If I am not trying to give lessons, or pass on life skills to young people as a police officer or a hockey related lesson, it will probably be a ‘man up’ type lesson to the younger generation. Case-in-point: while seated in a woman’s clothing store waiting for Bev to try on some outfits, a young boy around 10 or 12 came in with his mother. He sat near me also waiting, and from his demeanor was not very happy with his present situation.
I got his attention and started a conversation with him. Started with, “Listen bud, it doesn’t get any better; get used to it.”
Gave him a couple of pointers. Number one, when your mom comes out regardless of what she’s wearing or regardless of your opinion you tell her it looks great. Number two, for every dollar my wife spends in these stores, I get 25 cents on the dollar at the Pro Bass store. You have to figure out what your angle is.
My wife now comes out of the change room and looked over for my approval and the immediate answer was, “no, not good, don’t like it.” Back she goes to try another dress. I looked over at the young boy, realizing he’s probably confused with rule number one. So I explain rule number three. Every now and then a man has to have the moxy (not the word I used) to tell the truth. His mom came out and all went well. Mom could see that we were in conversation and I could only imagine how their conversation went when they departed. Mom was probably asking what he and the man were talking about and this kid’s probable reply to mom was “when I grow up, I’m going to have the moxy to tell you the truth.”
