Fernie business helps fight child food insecurity
Peacock Hospitality, through the Fernie Fox Hotel, has made a significant contribution to the Fernie Food Security Society (FFSS) as part of its bi-annual Community Grant program, supporting efforts to ensure no child in the Elk Valley goes hungry.
The hotel, which has a history of supporting community programs and youth initiatives, provided a $5,000 donation to help FFSS expand its programming.
Founded in June, FFSS has already provided food support to 89 children through bi-weekly food bins, grocery cards, and emergency food assistance—filling critical gaps during after-school hours, weekends, and school breaks.
“Food security for kids isn’t just about full bellies—it’s about giving them the foundation they need to thrive,” said Marina Pauw, co-owner of Peacock Hospitality with Jeremiah Pauw. “When children don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, they can focus on being kids, on learning, and on building their futures.”
With over 89 children receiving school district-funded meals during school hours, FFSS addresses the 672 unsecured meals per child that occur outside of school time each year in Fernie. The organization works with school administrators, youth care workers, and social workers to provide dignified food access through backpack programs, grocery cards, and emergency support.
“This donation is a game-changer for our ability to sustain and grow our programs,” said a representative from FFSS. “Every dollar goes directly toward nourishing kids and supporting families in our community.”
Since its inception in 2020, Peacock Hospitality, through the Fernie Fox Hotel, has provided over $130,000 in direct community support. The hotel sponsors the Fernie Snowmobile Association, Fernie Ghostriders Hockey, the Fernie Chamber of Commerce and more, as well as cash and in-kind donations to 25 local groups and organizations.
The Fernie Fox Hotel’s Community Grant program falls under the hotel’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program, which also includes its Sustainability Initiative.
