Fernie Chamber warns of phone/computer scam

The Fernie Chamber of Commerce is warning member businesses and the public about a telephone/computer scam.

Rachael Bone, Fernie Chamber Membership Services, sent a warning email message to members earlier this afternoon (Feb. 1).

“Please see the message below which we received this morning from a fellow chamber member reporting a telephone/computer scam. Please be aware if you receive a similar phone call….IT IS A SCAM. Please remember to never give out information to anyone you are unfamiliar with,” she stated.

“I just had a call from a New York number (315-458-7682) from someone purporting to be from “Microsoft Windows.” He said he was calling due to a “problem with your computer.” If I hadn’t told him I knew this was a scam, and hung up, I am sure he would have asked me to log on, or give him some information which would have compromised our on-line security,” noted the message sent to the Fernie Chamber.
