Fires being battled near Cranbrook
A team of 25 Southeast Fire Centre fire fighters spent the day battling a blaze that has grown to about four hectares in size 7.5 km northeast of Cranbrook.
The lightning strike fire featured metre tall flames at some points.
Water bombers were used to support ground crews at the first big fire near Cranbrook since 2003. No structures are threatened, report on-the-ground fire personnel.

Another fire at the Wasa Transfer Station had regional fire fighters hopping earlier this afternoon.
“The fire in the wood piles at the Wasa is currently contained to the three or four piles on west side, which has good road buffers around. We have a water truck en route as well as the contractor who has his hoe on site from unrelated work in the area. He can use the machine to provide additional guarding if we need it,” reported Regional District of East Kootenay emergency services coordinator Loree Duczek.
“So, at the moment, things are looking good – and we continue to ask everyone to stay away so we can get the situation fully dealt with.
