Fundraising underway For Canada Day celebration

Planning for Canada Day celebrations in the City of Cranbrook is well underway, which will now include a fireworks show.

The city had actively been approaching community groups to take over the planning and operations of the Canada Day celebrations since early in 2013. However, staff was not successful in finding a group to undertake this event. As such, city council approved a scaled down event with Leisure Services staff taking the lead in planning the event.

The city is now moving forward with a proposal from Gord Felske to provide the fireworks display for July 1. Council has committed $2,000 towards the fireworks celebration, and an additional $2,500 towards a music and entertainment celebration at Rotary Park. The city has also received a Heritage Canada Day grant of $2,500 to support the downtown celebration.

As a result, Mr. Felske will be undertaking a fundraising campaign, on behalf of the City of Cranbrook, to undertake the fireworks display.

“My goal is to raise at least $8,000, but the more we raise, the bigger and better the show,” Felske says.

Residents and businesses are advised that this is a legitimate fundraiser, supported by the City of Cranbrook and you may be approached for a donation to the fireworks display. Donations for the display will be held by the city.

If you wish to make a donation to the Canada Day fireworks display, please drop it off at Cranbrook City Hall during regular business hours. Cheques can be made out to the City of Cranbrook.

Once all the Canada Day events, locations and times are finalized the city will begin advertising to the public through the local media and on the cty’s website – www.cranbrook.ca.
