Funds help families with children in medical need

The Friends of Children Society has received $20,000 from the B.C. government to provide ongoing assistance to East Kootenay families with a child who must travel to receive medical care.

“Friends of Children is an amazing organization that is a lifeline for families with a sick child,” Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett said. “Their assistance greatly eases the costs faced by families who are already carrying too heavy an emotional burden, let alone a financial one.”

Friends of Children was established in 1998 in Prince George for the purpose of assisting northern B.C. families with children in extraordinary medical need. The East Kootenay branch was formed about 10 years later in Cranbrook. Friends of Children covers non-medical expenses such as travel and accommodation.

“Friends of Children is extremely grateful for Minister Bennett’s success in securing this significant financial contribution to support East Kootenay families,” said Pat Chisholm, East Kootenay Friends of Children support coordinator. “With this funding, East Kootenay families can be assured that support is available to them when accessing medical care for their children outside of their home community.”

The organization relies on the support of sponsors, donors and volunteers to provide a much-needed service for the East Kootenay and northern B.C. regions.

Friends of Children has assisted more than 2,000 families since its inception, and receives about 200 funding requests annually.
