Green Building Conference set for Kimberley March 2/3
The third annual Green Building Conference is set for March 2 and 3 at the Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre.
The conference brings the public together with green building experts for two days of workshops, presentations and a showcase. This year, Chris Turner will give the Friday night keynote speech. Turner is author of The Leap, How to Survive and Thrive in the Sustainable Economy, which has been called “one of the most arresting arguments for building a green economy yet in print.”
There are two days of workshops. Friday’s roster is aimed at professionals in the green building industry (though everyone is welcome to attend) while Saturday’s roster is targeted at a more general audience.
“Register to attend a day of workshops, or the entire conference,” said Erna Jensen-Shill, one of the event organizers. “But make sure you drop by the Green Building Showcase on Saturday between noon and four; it’s the place to find regional builders, landscapers, solar installers and more. You can learn a lot and it’s free to drop in.”
Free as well is Chris Turner’s keynote address at 7 p.m. on Friday.
As for the workshops and presentations, Jensen-Shill said your best bet is to visit the website and browse around: www.GreenBuildingConference.ca. We have a great line up of presenters, including Peter Amerongen of Habitat Studio and Workshop out of Edmonton, who was a conference favourite last year, Guido Wimmers of The Canadian Passive House Institute, and Bob Deeks of RDC Fine Homes, who has recently built BC’s first zero energy home.
“The schedule is on line, and the College of the Rockies is ready to accept registrations: The early bird deadline is January 31, 2012. This year, all conference registrants will receive a ticket to the Friday night networking event, including appetizers,” Jensen-Shill said.
Everything will take place at the Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre.
The conference organizing committee includes Wildsight, the City of Kimberley, the College of the Rockies, Kootenay Rockies Innovation Council and Smart Planning for Communities. Key sponsors include Teck, BC Hydro, and Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation.
“This event will help the East Kootenay region take the lead in education and implementation of these green building ideas, techniques and products,” said Jensen-Shill.
