Heavy rainfall becoming worrisome

Heavy rainfall is starting to create problems in the East Kootenay.

Emergency crews are currently responding to flooding in Fairmont Hot Springs this morning after heavy rainfall and resulting debris blocked culverts forcing the water into the street and through yards.

“The (Regional District of East Kootenay) RDEK and its Columbia Valley Emergency Program are on scene, along with the RCMP. The Ministry of Transportation is mobilizing equipment to clear out the culverts and our priority right now is to get the water back within the creek channel,” said RDEK Information Officer Loree Duczek.

Some yards and streets are being affected by water and debris; however, no homes are flooding at this time and there is no danger to residents. The pond at Mountainside Golf Course has also filled with debris and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort has been notified.

Crews will be reassessing the situation at daylight and will be closely monitoring both Fairmont Creek and Cold Spring Creek as further rainfall is forecasted for today.

Heavy rainfall is also causing havoc in the Elk Valley. Creeks are surpassing banks near Elkford and e-KNOW has just heard a report of the road to Coal Mountain Coal Mine being closed due to flooding. We are still checking for details.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
