Heavy snowfall expected until this evening
Heavy snowfall is currently occurring across the East Kootenay and the snowfall is expected to continue until this evening with 15 to 25 cm expected, Environment Canada warned this morning.
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is also warning residents of heavy snowfall across the region, offering a regional breakdown.
Snowfall accumulation received is currently at 30 cm for some areas in the Elk Valley, with snowfall still occurring. Another 20 cm is expected to fall today with snowfall continuing into the evening, Mainroad said.
Snowfall for Yahk, Cranbrook and Kimberley areas is currently at around 20 cm for some areas. Snow is continuing to fall heavily with another 15 cm expected for today.
In the Columbia Valley, snowfall received so far is up 12 cm with an additional five cm forecasted for today. Another five cm is forecasted for today into tonight.
“Reminder that roads are cleared in priority sequence, A class (main highways) B Class (secondary highways), C class (main feeder roads and bus routes, and finally D Class roads (low volume side roads),” Mainroad noted.
Environment Canada said snowfall amounts may vary widely over short distances, adding the snow is expected to taper this evening as the system moves eastward through the prairies.
