Hopley pleads guilty to breach of probation; next court date Feb. 20
Randall Hopley, accused of child abduction following the September (2011) disappearance and subsequent return of Sparwood toddler Kienan Hebert, pleaded guilty to two counts of breach of probation Jan. 23.
Following Hopley’s plea, via his lawyer William Thorne in Cranbrook Provincial Court, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail, where he’s been since being tracked down by police after young Kienan was returned to his family home. The boy had been away from his family for five days.
At that time Hopley,46, was on probation for an earlier attempted abduction and he was required to report to a probation officer on a regular basis, as well as not change residences. He was convicted in 2008 of trying to kidnap a 10-year-old Sparwood boy and was sentenced to 18 months in jail and three years’ probation.
The court heard Hopley didn’t report to his probation officer on Sept. 12 and the following day he was arrested in Crowsnest Pass, Alta. following an extensive police search.
Hopley remains in solitary confinement at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre.
He will make his next court appearance on Feb. 20 on charges of breaking and entering, abduction and kidnapping, related to the Hebert case.
