Inquest to be held into death of rescue diver at Creston

The BC Coroners Service confirmed today (Oct. 21) that an inquest will be held regarding the death of Sheilah Sweatman from June 4-7, 2012.

Sweatman was performing a recovery operation in the Goat River with the Swift Water Rescue division of the Nelson Search and Rescue unit when she died in Creston on June 29.

Presiding coroner Mark Coleman and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death.

While the jury may not, by law, make any findings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future,  a Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General  BC Coroners Service press release explained.

An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.

The inquest will take place at the B.C. Provincial Court at 320 Ward St., Nelson.
