June is notorious for high water
By Bob Ede
It seems like it has been raining the entire month. June is notorious for high water. Rain mixed with run-off turns the creeks and rivers fast and muddy. Toby Creek backs into Lake Windermere. Dutch creek rolls rampant into Columbia Lake. Both lakes change colour and rise up the banks. The wetlands fill to bursting and water seems to cover the valley floor from mountain slope to mountain slope.
The water at Taynton’s Bay on Lake Windermere flows into the parking lot, just as it has for decades.
Road closures are common, like this on the Columbia River at Radium Hot Springs. It is not advised to drive past road closure signs.
Before the rerouting and dyking of Toby Creek, Athalmer regularly flooded as seen in this 1933 photo captured by Columbia Valley pioneer photographer, A.E. Fisher.
Bob Ede has been stuck in the rain with a leaky jacket that channels water down the crack of his arse rendering him crankier than usual. He can be reached at: www.palliserpass.wordpress.com
