Scams
Police continually hear about scams, for the most part people are smart and seem to catch on. It’s difficult for us to warn you about every scam, as there are so many and ever changing. The approach can sound very convincing and once you are hooked they will lead you down the garden path until they get some money.
I can only hope that you are suspicious of every transaction or contact. There are a few tips I can offer. You were not randomly selected by some account executive who is striving to get millions of dollars out of his country and will give you a share. Your computer may have a virus but people do not sit in little rooms checking computers across the country and then contacting you in an effort to help. I could go on and on but you get the picture.
Skateboards on the highway
The road maintenance contractor has done a great job of getting the gravel off the highway, but it seems that has led to another problem. Skateboards. Police have received a number of calls about long boards coasting down the hills through town in a dangerous manner. Most are concerned about their safety, I agree the chance of getting hit are pretty good. Often we as police are called because of safety, but it this case it’s their own doing, tough to send them to for a time out. But after researching several provincial statutes we have found that it is ‘Unauthorized use of a Highway’ and subject to a $115 fine. The MVA does not authorize the use of long boards on the highway. Catching them might be a challenge, but you have been warned.
Long weekend thefts
We were hit again on the long weekend, with several thefts from vehicles. Again, not valuable items, but still a nuisance. Keep and eye out for suspicious activity.
Bicycles
Some trivia you may or may not know. Bicycles are to ride on the right hand side of the road, with the traffic. It is illegal to ride on a crosswalk or sidewalk. Should you use the crosswalk to get to the other side, you must get off your bike and become a pedestrian. You must have lights after sunset, both front and back.
