Mainroad reminds public to be prepared for winter driving conditions

Driving in winter can be treacherous. Mainroad reminds motorists and residents to be prepared for winter driving conditions and the unpredictability of the winter season.

Prepare your vehicle for winter weather and before heading out, visit www.drivebc.ca for current road conditions and weather forecasts. We strongly recommend that the public use this website prior to travel in inclement weather. Webcams are available for the public to see real-time conditions throughout our service area. Mainroad maintains a 24-hour hotline for reporting of accidents, unsafe road conditions and road kill. The call center is used to update DriveBC, dispatch additional personnel and record public communication as required.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting maintains provincial highways and roads between Brisco (north), Goatfel (west), Alberta (east) and the U.S. border (south) 24 hour hotline: 1-800-665-4929.

During a snow event, Mainroad has a full complement of winter operators plus mechanical support working every shift 24/7. Mainroad uses three materials for winter road maintenance: winter sand, salt brine and salt. The use of a specific material is determined by forecast and actual weather conditions. Winter material stocks on hand are stored in nine depots situated throughout our service area.

“We know the importance of having our drivers and equipment ready because in a couple of hours we can go from clear sky to blizzard in the East Kootenay. We’re working with the public to make sure everybody gets home safe; we treat these roads as ours because we know they’re yours,” says Jim Conley, General Manager for Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting. “Help our crews by maintaining a safe following distance when approaching highway maintenance vehicles. When you attempt to pass, you put yourself, the truck operator, and the driving public at risk.”

We support Shift into Winter, a joint Provincial initiative supported by organizations committed to improving the safety of drivers during the winter months.
