Prescribed burn in the Levirs Avenue area
As part of our Community Wildfire Management Program, the Kimberley Fire Department and the BC Wildfire Service will be commencing a six-hectare prescribed burn. It will be located at the Burdette Street entrance to the Kimberley Nature Park, up to the old gravel pit below Trickle Creek Golf Course and will begin in the next couple weeks.
The objective of this treatment is to reduce the risk of catastrophic fires in the Wildland Urban Interface adjacent to the City of Kimberley. Residents are asked to stay clear of the area while the work is being completed and to keep their windows closed as there will be significant smoke created from the burn. For additional information please contact the Fire Department at 250-427-4114.
Fuels Management
The City of Kimberley Fuels Management Program continues with the Duck Pond Unit starting up this week with pile burning. This unit is located above Forest Crown on the east side of the Kimberley Nature Park. The Ponderosa Trail Unit located above Overwaitea Hill off Burdett Street has stopped burning due to the snow received last week and should be starting up again in mid-April. Both projects are UBCM funded treatments that started last year and are projected to be completed by the end of April this year. The public is asked to stay clear of the areas during the burning operations. For more information on the project, please contact the Kimberley Fire Department at 250-427-4114.
Outdoor burning
All outdoor burning within the City of Kimberley is regulated under Bylaw No. 2364 and must be approved by the Kimberley Fire Department. Special occasion burning permits will be issued by the Fire Chief for fires in parks or recreation areas, burns for land clearing, and for approved barbecue pits for cooking purposes. It is unlawful to burn without a permit, to burn construction materials, to burn yard debris, or to burn in an outside barrel or outside incinerator. All approved burning within the City of Kimberley must be supervised at all times and have sufficient equipment on site to extinguish or control the burn.
Mark Creek water level warning
Be advised that water levels can change rapidly, and are especially high during spring run-off. Flows are extremely fast when water levels are high and present an extreme danger to anyone falling in the creek. Please stay clear of the creek during periods of high flow.
Spring Yard Cleanup
By Friday, April 8 crews will be finished spring cleanup for residents who have regular garbage pickup on Wednesdays. For residents who have a regular garbage collection day of Tuesdays, their spring cleanup will begin on April 12.
