Officers recovering; suspects remanded
In the early morning hours of Nov. 12, Kimberley RCMP became involved in chase with a stolen truck, that was being used in a theft in progress at a local golf course.
Upon investigating at the golf course, a RCMP cruiser was rammed by the suspect vehicle and a follow-up cruiser was also struck, igniting a chase that led to the city core, where another cruiser was rammed and a downtown business was also struck by the suspect vehicle.
The chase then led up hill to Kimberley Alpine Resort’s ski hill maintenance area where police boxed the suspects in. They then apprehended them after a foot chase.
One of the two suspects was taken to hospital for possible injuries, while three Kimberley RCMP officers sustained injuries in the incident and three police cruisers were destroyed.
The two suspects went before a Judicial Justice of the Peace by way of telephone conference the evening of Nov 12.
Both were remanded in custody until their next court appearance, Nov 19.
A total of seven charges were laid including, Dangerous Driving, Possession of Stolen Property, resist arrest, Assault of a Police Officer (two counts) with a weapon (vehicle), Fail to Comply with Conditions (two counts).
Police are still gathering evidence and further charges could forthcoming.
“The injured officers are doing well. None of the injuries were serious and they will likely be back to work soon,” reported Kimberley RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel.
