Protest planned; website established
Taking Back East Kootenay Highways began as a Facebook page over one year ago, after a group of locals grew tired of continual poor winter conditions of regional highways.
Today, the page has 2,056 members and it has grown to the point where organizers have created their own webpage www.ekhighways.org.
“This website is designed to help you make your voice heard and to provide information to those who do not have access to Facebook,” said Taking Back East Kootenay Highways co-administrator Greg Johnson.
Along with that step, Taking Back East Kootenay Highways administrators are planning to stage a protest at Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett’s office on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Organizers are urging people to attend the 11 a.m. protest at 100 Cranbrook Street in Cranbrook to ensure the MLA understands their disappointment over his recent statement of support for Mainroad East Kootenay, the company in charge of maintaining East Kootenay highways under provincial contract, coming up for renewal this year.
Organizers are asking for the protest to be a peaceful sit-in but also wish to make it clear that Mainroad’s work has unacceptable and a new contractor should be hired to maintain regional highways.
