Provincial Ombudsperson coming to region
As part of her ongoing initiative to bring the Office of the Ombudsperson to communities throughout British Columbia, Ombudsperson Kim Carter will tour the Sparwood, Cranbrook and Invermere areas June 24, 25 and 26.
The Provincial Ombudsperson will be meeting with public agencies that fall under her jurisdiction and with community groups and will be speaking about her office’s role in ensuring provincial and public agencies treat British Columbians fairly. She will be speaking about her recent systemic investigation into senior’s care, adult guardianship and open meetings best practices for local governments.
The tour also provides an opportunity for members of the public to make a complaint in person, as they can meet with investigators to discuss their concerns about a public agency.
Due to demand, appointments to make a complaint while the office is in each community need to be booked ahead of time by calling 1-800-567-3247.
The Office of the Ombudsperson can investigate complaints about all provincial ministries and boards, Crown corporations, colleges and universities, schools and boards of education, health authorities, local governments and self-governing professions.
“We’re here to serve the entire province; I want people to know that if they have not been successful in resolving their problems with the public agency and still feel they have not been treated fairly and reasonably, they can come to us,” Carter said. “While the office receives the majority of complaints by telephone, mail or online, some people are more comfortable meeting face-to-face when raising their concerns and I feel it’s important that this opportunity is available to people throughout the province.”
The Ombudsperson is an independent officer of the legislature. The office’s mandate is to impartially investigate complaints to ensure that provincial and local public agencies treat the people they serve fairly and reasonably. The schedule for the tour is: Sparwood, June 24; Cranbrook, June 25; and Invermere on June 26.
