Rib robber wrapped up by off-duty officer
From the ‘crooks will try to sell the darnedest things’ files comes this item from Kimberley.
Platzl restaurant The Pedal and Tap (P&T) reported in a blog post Jan. 30 that they were victimized by a crook who stole some ribs that were smoking outside the establishment one day last week.

Video surveillance footage showed an unidentified man helping himself to the ribs and some recyclable empties. Restaurant management initially assumed the act was done by someone who was hungry but a lingering concern about staff safety forced them to report the incident to Kimberley RCMP.
“Earlier this week our prep cook was smoking some ribs in our smoker behind Pedal & Tap. When she went to retrieve them they were gone! We watched the feedback on our video surveillance and discovered that an unidentified Caucasian male had helped himself to the ribs along with some bottles and cans we had stored behind the restaurant. For anyone who has spent any time in Kimberley, ‘unidentified’ is not a term we use often,” the P&T blog detailed.
“We were gonna let it go because we thought he was probably hungry, but our concerns around staff safety were enough to get the RCMP involved. They were very responsive and told us they would spend the next little while combing back alleys searching for the suspect.
“Well guess who was trying to sell half-cooked ribs behind Lordco this morning to an undercover cop? Our little rib robber himself! Way to go Kimberley RCMP!” The P&T blog exclaimed.
Kimberley RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel, one of his arms immobilized in a sling from a skiing incident earlier this year, was the sharp-eyed officer to make the collar.
“The theft was reported earlier in the week. We had the description and I spotted him this morning while off duty and in civilian clothes. Even though I’ve dealt with him before he didn’t recognize me,” Newel told e-KNOW.
“One for the good guys! As for the hungry rib robber, he’s been arrested and we guess he wasn’t that hungry after all. Thanks Kimberley RCMP! #ribrobbernabbed #kimberleyrcmp #pedalandtap,” the P&T blog concluded.
