SD5 welcomes new VP for Isabella Dicken School

Laura-Lee Phillips was recently appointed as the one-year temporary vice-principal of Isabella Dicken Elementary School in Fernie as of the 2013/14 school year by the School District No. 5 (SD5) Board of Education.

“Laura-Lee has a track record of creating connections with both students and parents,” says SD5 Board chair Frank Lento. “She’s also a strong advocate for literacy, which is an important focus for our district.”

According to Lento, Phillips has been with the district for 16 years, beginning her work here as a Teacher on Call in 1997. “For 15 of those years Laura-Lee has worked at the elementary school level and currently teaches at Isabella Dicken so the transition will be extremely smooth.”

Phillips grew up in the prairie provinces. Born in Manitoba, she attended elementary school in Alberta and middle/secondary school in Saskatchewan before moving to Fernie and graduating from Fernie Secondary School in 1990.

“This is a great area to live and be active,” says Phillips. “While I have a strong focus on literacy I believe physical skills are also important to student development and learning. The outdoor diversity available in Fernie makes it easy to encourage active participation based on individual needs.”

Phillips says she looks forward to sharing her passion for both literacy and active living as vice-principal of Isabella Dicken.
