An attempted murder charge has been laid after a shooting incident on Feb. 24 in Cranbrook.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Cranbrook RCMP responded to a firearms complaint at an apartment block on King Street West.

Police determined a shot had been fired into an apartment on the third floor from the ground level narrowly missing one of the occupants. The apartment had three people inside at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured.

A police dog and handler was quickly activated and attended. The team located a firearm used in the incident and then a male who was hiding in the area. A 47-year-old male from Cranbrook was arrested and is currently in custody.

Through investigation police have determined that the suspect and a person in the apartment knew each other. This is not believed to be a random act.

Witnesses were interviewed and a search warrant has been executed on the suspect’s residence where further evidence was obtained.
The subject went before a Judicial Justice of the Peace the day of his arrest and is being held for his next court appearance, February 27.

A charge of Careless Use of a Firearm has also been laid.

Quick response by police and specifically Police Dog Services led to the successful apprehension of the suspect within a very short time, says Cpl. Chris Newel.
