Slew of highway work announced for south part of region
Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett May 24 announced $7.6 million will be invested by the B.C. Liberal Government in seven road improvement projects across the riding.
These projects include:
– Highway 43 paving (Sparwood to Line Creek Road). The first four kilometres of Highway 43 will be milled out and resurfaced with new asphalt pavement. Full width pavement will be overlaid on the remaining 12 kilometres.
– Highway 3 reflector improvements. Visibility along Highway 3 will be improved with the installation of 32 new curve signs and 600 diamond grade double-sided barrier reflectors.
– Highway 3 asphalt rehabilitation (Olson Overhead to Sparwood). The existing pavement will be milled, and hot mix asphalt will be over-layed from the Hosmer-Olsen passing lanes to the junction with Highway 43.
– Highway 3 Wardner Overhead restoration (pictured above). Work will include replacing a deck joint and restoring damaged concrete along the Wardner Overhead Bridge.
– Highway 3 and Brenner’s Road intersection improvements. The Ministry and Regional District of East Kootenay are partnering to resurface and improve this intersection.
– Hard surfacing on Savarie and Hidden Springs Roads. First time hard surfacing converts gravel surface to a paved surface; this is especially important on Savarie Road, which will be a pick-up point on the local school bus route.
– Elk Valley Recycled Asphalt Paving. Eleven kilometres of Lower Elk Valley Road will have recycled asphalt placed, providing a sealed surface using recycled materials.
“These seven projects represent the 11th consecutive season that our government has made significant improvements to the transportation infrastructure in Kootenay East. Highway 3 and 43, in particular, are highly-travelled routes, and the work scheduled for this summer will make driving in my constituency safer and more convenient for years to come,” Bennett stated.
Work will take place throughout the summer. All projects are scheduled for completion by September 15.
