Slow for emergency vehicles

An education blitz held last week in the Columbia Valley showed that more drivers need to slow down when approaching a road-side emergency scene.

Drivers also showed a tendency to not slow down for tow vehicles, reported Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment NCO S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac.

“People tend to slow down for emergency vehicles on the side of the road but often do not consider tow vehicles as emergency vehicles. Speeds approaching tow vehicles and operators on the side of the road have the potential for a serious incident,” he said.

East Kootenay Traffic Services last week conducted an education blitz at two locations in the Columbia Valley.

A tow vehicle was placed on the side of the road with a wreck and the traffic was monitored via radar. Vehicles must slow to 70 km/h when approaching an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. The penalty for speeding is $173.

During the blitz:

56 warnings were issued for failing to slow down;

2 seatbelt charges;

10 speeding tickets;

12 vehicle defects, warning;

1 no insurance;

3 fail to produce licence and registration.
