Sparwood Council Facts

Provincial Champions

District of Sparwood council May 14 recognized and congratulated members of the Sparwood Bowl & Billiards Bantam Girls Provincial Champions and Bronze Medalists at Nationals.  Team members are Kally Campbell, Portia Eldaun, Macenzi Lukkar, Janaya White and Coach Bob Stockey.

Michel Creek Road Watermain Project

The contract for the construction of the Michel Creek Road Watermain Project was awarded to Hebditch Holdings Ltd. of Cranbrook, for the tendered price of $2,925,046.25 plus applicable taxes.

Recycling Bins

The recycling bins that are located between the Esso and Husky service stations will be relocated to Engelmann Spruce Drive near the animal pound between Public Works and Mainroad Contracting.  The current location of the bins will become an access for the Best Western development at 101 Aspen Drive that will be constructed this year.

BC Hydro Right of Way/CP Rail Access

Council approved a Right of Way in favour of BC Hydro across Lot 1, DL 4588, Plan EPP1731 to accommodate overhead power service to the new CP Rail Automated Equipment Identification.  Last year CP Rail was granted permission from the district to construct a turn around on district-owned land at 1101 Highway 3 (south of Finning).  They now would like to put power in at this site and therefore are requesting a Right of Way.

Coal Miner Days

Council has approved all road closures, use of requested facilities, and equipment, to be funded from the Coal Miner Days budget, as outlined in District of Sparwood Policy for the 2012 Coal Miner Days.

A Special Occasion Permit was approved for the Sparwood Mixed Slo-Pitch League  to operate a refreshment garden at the Lions Park Tennis Court on June 9 and 10.

Council travel

Mayor Lois Halko was authorized to attend a meeting to discuss the future of the P.A.R.T.Y. Program in Fernie on May 24. Travel was approved for the mayor and any member of council wanting to attend an ICBC stakeholder meeting in Cranbrook on June 19, and a BC Hydro consultation meeting in Cranbrook on May 31.

Bylaws

Michel Creek Road Water Extension Local Service Area Establishment Bylaw 1093, 2012 and Michel Creek Road Water Extension Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 1094, 2012 were adopted.

Senior’s Birthday Book

Those Sparwood seniors who have, or will, reach the age of 75 years this year are invited to attend a council meeting to sign our Senior’s Birthday Book. Please notify the District of Sparwood Municipal Office by June 6, if you, or someone you know has turned 75 years of age or will be turning 75 this year.  We will then send an invitation to the recipient to attend the June 18, regular meeting of council.  Family and friends are also encouraged to attend.

Congratulations Sparwood Secondary Class of 2012

The next 10 years of your life will pass by as quickly as your last five years in high school. It is important to remember the community in which you grew up in, and all the values and morals that you developed during your time here. May your future be bright and your dreams fulfilled. Remember; shoot for the moon that way even if you miss you will still land upon the stars.

Outdoor fire pits

It is that time of year again when people want to have a fire in their back yard.  Please note that it is a requirement of the District of Sparwood that you first obtain a fire pit permit.  These are available at the main office free of charge and need to be renewed every year.

Sprinkling Regulations

To promote water conservation in Sparwood, the district has implemented sprinkling regulations that shall be in effect from June 1 through September 30 each year.  Even numbered addresses are allowed to water on even calendar days and odd numbered addresses are allowed to water on odd calendar days.

Exceptions to the water sprinkling restrictions include nurseries, golf courses; farms, turf and tree farms, and municipal parks, playing fields, and other municipal properties. There will be special permission for those residents who have installed a new lawn (either seed or sod) for a period of 21 days after installation of the lawn.
