Sparwood Council Facts
The Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer of the District of Sparwood were June 4 authorized to execute a lease renewal agreement with the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce. The term of the lease is for four years commencing July 1. The chamber has leased the building located at 141A Aspen Drive since 2007 providing tourist information services.
Flood Protection Program
The District of Sparwood will enter into an agreement with Emergency Management BC under the Flood Protection Program for the Elk River Riprap Protection Works. The province has agreed to fund up to $11,000 of the $16,500 project.
Committee of the Whole Recommendations
The following recommendations from the Committee of the Whole Meeting held Monday, May 28, were approved by council.
– Council supports funding the cost of a financial review of the 2010 Strategic Plan for expansion of Lilac Terrace, prior to completion of the Business Plan, with the cost not to exceed $20,000.
– In response to a letter received from the City of Fernie seeking expressions of interest to submit a regional bid to host the 2016 or 2018 BC Winter Games. Council recognizes the tremendous benefits and desire to participate in the BC Winter Games; however, Council recognizes the recruitment challenges and therefore respectfully decline but advised that the District of Sparwood facilities will be available for rental if so desired.
– A letter received from Mountain Air Chalets regarding the status of easement through Causeway Bay Hotel parking lot was referred to staff to report back to council.
Kootenay Child Development Centre
Travel was approved for any member of Council wanting to attend the Grand Opening of the Kootenay Child Development Centre in Cranbrook on Friday, June 15.
Community Wildfire Protection Plan
The District of Sparwood’s application for funding under the Community Wildfire Protection Plan was approved. A grant in the amount of $8,130 or 50% of the total project will be received from the Provincial Government.

Sprinkling Regulations
To promote water conservation in Sparwood, the district has implemented sprinkling regulations that shall be in effect from June 1 through September 30 each year. Even numbered addresses are allowed to water on even calendar days and odd numbered addresses are allowed to water on odd calendar days.
Exceptions to the water sprinkling restrictions include nurseries, golf courses, farms, turf and tree farms, municipal parks, playing fields, and other municipal properties. There will be special permission for those residents who have installed a new lawn (either seed or sod) for a period of 21 days after installation of the lawn.
Outdoor fire pits
It is that time of year again when people want to have a fire in their back yard. Please note that it is a requirement of the District of Sparwood that you first obtain a fire pit permit. These are available at the main office free of charge and need to be renewed every year.
