Staples steps up to help schools buy supplies
SD5 Board Notes

At the Oct. 9 School District No. 5 school board of trustees’ meeting Connor Stewart from Staples Office Depot presented the board with $500 gift certificates for each of the Cranbrook elementary schools to support the purchase of school supplies.
This opportunity was created through a fundraising initiative over the past summer. Mr. Stewart emphasized that it is Staples intention to expand the fundraising program to include elementary schools in the Elk Valley next school year. The board is very grateful to Staples and to Mr. Stewart for this donation.
Graduation requirements under review
The Government is currently reviewing the requirements necessary to graduate in B.C. The SD5 Graduation Requirements Review was held on Thursday, October 11.
Advocacy
Whereas children benefit from high quality early care and learning services; and Integrating early care and learning services is an effective way to meet the needs of children and working families; and we value quality early childhood education in our community; and we are encouraged by the potential of the Community Plan for a Public System of Integrated Early Care and Learning to make a real difference for BC children, families and communities; be it resolved that School District 5 urges the province to commit to the Plan’s vision allocate adequate funds and work with school boards and communities to immediately begin its implementation.
That the Board sends a letter to the Regional District of East Kootenay asking them for their support for the amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act to expand and/or erect school speed zone times in our district/communities [reference: https://www.th.gov.bc.ca/key_initiatives/legislation/mvb-amend.htm#sp]
That the recommendation for a review of the International Program be referred to the Superintendent for her recommendation.
Education/Policy
That the Draft Policy French Immersion be sent to the Board of Education for approval.
That Policy 3.26 Home Education be sent to the Board of Education for deletion. [Housekeeping; this Policy was replaced by Policy 3.41 Students Registered for Home Schooling].
That Policy 3.15 Selection and Challenge of Learning Resources be sent to the Board of Education for deletion [Housekeeping; this Policy was replaced by Policy 3.40 Instructional Resources].
Finance Ops
That the Board of Education send a letter in support of SD8 and the concerns that have been raised in their letter of September 6, 2012 to Honourable Don McRae [re: funding in general and more specifically, government’s proposed cancellation of funding protection].
That the Board of Education invite the new Minister of Education, Don McRae, to tour our district.
General
That the board approves the Learning Improvement Fund [allocations] and send it to the Minister for final approval.
That the board provide support in principle, at no cost to the board, the PACWEST Provincial Volleyball Championships held at the College of the Rockies in February 2013.
That the Board of Education submit a five-year capital plan to the Ministry of Education [with Mount Baker continuing as the District’s number one replacement priority].
That Trustee Ayling replace Trustee Besanger for the remainder of Trustee Besanger’s term on the KCT Board [due to a scheduling conflict for Trustee Besanger].
