No-stopping zone created to halt ‘bear jams’
An 11 km ‘no-stopping zone’ has been implemented on Highway 93 South between McKay Creek and Cobb Lake in Kootenay National Park because of recent ‘bear jam’ activity.
“Please do not pull over to watch wildlife here. The zone will be removed when wildlife move to higher elevations in pursuit of natural food sources,” Parks Canada asked in a message to the public.
“When too many people stop to view bears, the animals are at greater risk of losing their natural fear of people, which increases their risk of being struck by a vehicle or exhibiting aggressive behaviour that could lead to the animal being destroyed. Additionally, the build-up of vehicles stopping along curved corners with narrow shoulders is putting people and wildlife at risk,” Parks Canada explained.
