Three regional safety organizations get funding boost

Three East Kootenay organizations have received Public Safety Grants from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister and Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett announced Dec. 10 that the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (based in Fernie) will get $68,000, Fernie Volunteer Ski Patrol Society – $61,800 and the Sparwood Search and Rescue Society $51,000.

“It is extremely important to fund local associations dedicated to community safety, as that is the number one priority for us as we enter this winter season,” Bennett stated.

Across British Columbia, 127 recipients will share $4,658,110 in the latest rounds of grants in the public safety sector.

Grant recipients include programs for search and rescue societies, fire departments, restorative justice societies, crime stopper associations, and emergency response teams, among others.

Community Gaming Grants help local groups provide important services for British Columbia families.

Last fiscal year, in 2011/12, government distributed a total of $135 million in gaming grants for eligible community programs and services.

About 5,300 community groups benefited from funding during 2011/12.
