Update on precautionary search

A search for a possible missing person near at Mercury Bowl near Fernie has reached an inconclusive end, Sparwood RCMP report.

“Further to yesterday’s (Feb. 7) report of ski tracks discovered near an avalanche site on an area known as Mercury Bowl, a search was conducted by Fernie Search and Rescue and an RCMP police service dog handler. The search of the area was inconclusive,” reported Sparwood RCMP detachment NOC. Staff Sgt. Lorne Craig. “The very experienced searchers detected a faint avalanche transceiver signal that was sporadic and could not be traced. This may have been interference. The search dogs were also not able to indicate that anyone was buried. Aside from some ski tracks, police do not have any evidence to suggest anyone was actually caught in the slide,” he said.

Police will continue to monitor any reports of missing backcountry skiers.
