Water meters beaten silly in Cranbrook referendum
The City of Cranbrook does not want to go into further debt to pay for universal water metering.
City voters were unanimous Nov. 19, with 4,140 declaring they were not in favour “of Council adopting Water Meter Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 3732, 2011 to borrow upon the credit of the municipality a sum not exceeding Seven Million Seven Hundred Seventy-Eight Thousand Five Hundred ($7,778,500) Dollars to be repaid over a period not exceeding 15 years for the purpose of funding the acquisition and installation of water meters to properties in the City of Cranbrook?”
Only 722 people voted in favour of the borrowing.
