A rain filled long weekend is expected, according to the latest forecast from Environment Canada.

The City of Cranbrook and the East Kootenay region overall could possibly see between 40 to 50mm of rainfall in some areas into Sunday evening.

As a result, the City of Cranbrook is again reminding residents and property owners who have historically been affected by spring flooding, especially in low lying areas of the city, are encouraged to plan ahead and take any necessary precautions should any flooding occur.

Staff from Public Works continues to monitor Joseph Creek and although water levels are still high, it is not considered to be in any danger of overflowing its banks at this point. Staff from Public Works, in partnership with the Regional District of East Kootenay, also continues to monitor the water levels at Elizabeth Lake. Pumping operations (pictured above) are expected to continue the weekend, so vehicle access across Wattsville Road will continue to be impeded.

City staff has actively been preparing sandbags over the past couple of days. For those who wish to have some sandbags handy as a precaution, both sandbags and sand is available beside the City Public Works yard on Cobham Avenue. Residents are encouraged to bring their own shovels to fill the sandbags.

Staff will continue to monitor the water level in Joseph Creek and Elizabeth Lake this weekend and monitor potential changes in the weather over the next number of weeks until the spring freshet has passed.
