Wildfires contained; mop up continues

Two wildfires that had Lake Koocanusa area and Columbia Valley residents on evacuation orders and alerts last weekend are now 100% contained.

However, Wildfire Management BC crews continue to monitor and mop up the fires.

The following is an update on the Spillimacheen/Harrogate fire and Baynes/Koocanusa fire from Regional District of East Kootenay Information Officer Loree Duczek.

Spillimacheen Fire

Spilli fireSize: 54 hectares – no growth.

Location: The fire is burning next to Highway 95 north of Spillimacheen.

Update

This fire is now classified as 100% contained. Several successful burnouts have been completed. (This is when they burn towards the fire to reduce fuels around the perimeter). BC Forest Service crews are continuing to work towards reinforcing containment, especially on the north side, until they are confident the containment will hold.

Resources:  31 firefighters, five pieces of heavy equipment and aerial support.

Alerts and Orders

Evacuation ALERT remains in place for the area south of the RDEK Boundary, east of Columbia River south to Westside Road in Spillimacheen.

Baynes Lake Fire (N10269)

Update

The fire is still active but is classified as being 100% contained.  The containment is holding and crews are still working on mopping up the hot spots on the fire’s perimeter with assistance from a sustained action crew from Ontario.

Resources:  47 firefighters, two pieces of heavy equipment.

Forecast:  The forecast is calling for the chance of thunderstorms over the next couple of days with possible gusty winds of up to 60 km/h on Friday afternoon and evening. There may be limited precipitation (showers) with this system if it materializes. More active thunderstorms are forecast for the weekend, which may bring more significant showers. Fire Danger is rated as ‘High.’

Alerts and Orders

Evacuation alert for this area was lifted yesterday, July 8 at 11:20 a.m.

Other

A province-wide fire ban remains in effect.
