Wilks votes nay to Motion 312

Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth’s attempt to have Parliament study the definition of human life (Motion 312) was defeated 203 to 91 on Sept. 26.

Included in the nay votes was Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks, who explained his vote mirrored the wishes of the Prime Minister.

“During the election the Prime Minister was very clear that he would not reopen the abortion debate. I fully respect the decision of the Prime Minister and stand by him,” Wilks told e-KNOW.

The controversial motion received support from one cabinet minister that has added fuel to the fire.

Status of Women Minister Rona Ambrose voted ‘aye’ to the motion, setting off NDP MPs, who all voted against the motion, as well as women’s groups around the country.

Ambrose stated on Twitter, after the vote:  “I have repeatedly raised concerns about discrimination of girls by sex selection abortion. No law needed, but we need awareness!”
