Woman killed by train
A 50-year-old Invermere woman was struck and killed by a train last night when she tried to cross in front of it.
The accident occurred near 4th Avenue and Borden Street in Athalmer just before 7 p.m., report Columbia Valley RCMP.
The woman was “struck while attempting to cross the train tracks with a friend. The female was killed instantly by the impact. CP Police, BC Coroner’s Service as well as the Columbia Valley RCMP are working collaboratively to investigate this tragic incident,” reported Cpl. Grant Simpson in a media release.
“From information obtained up to this point in the investigation, it is believed that the females thought they could get across the tracks before the train arrived at their crossing point. Alcohol is believed to be a major contributing factor in this ongoing investigation,” Cpl. Simpson stated.
