Work begins on Windermere Creek

A contractor is continuing work today to reduce the build-up of sediment in Windermere Creek.

“We have been working with the province to get the approvals to do the work within the creek channel and have been given the green light for two days of equipment time,” explained Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Emergency Operations Centre Director, Brian Funke. “The work will focus on removing the build-up of sediment and gravel in the lower portion of the stream bed, with the hopes of returning the creek back to its channel.”

Windermere Creek flooded its banks spilling debris and water into residential property and into Shadybrook Campground last week.

“We have been working with the property owners and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and are pleased to see the work approved and moving forward,” added Funke.

The equipment, which includes a Series 200 excavator and 966 Loader moved onto the site yesterday afternoon. RDEK staff and Emergency Program personnel will be visiting the site over the next two days to monitor the work and its effect on water levels in the Creek channel.
