Abbot Pass Hut survey runs to May 22

As part of Parks Canada’s commitment to honouring the importance of Abbot Pass Hut National Historic Site, which is permanently closed, (located on the B.C./Alberta/Banff National Park border) we are asking Canadians what should be remembered about this nationally significant heritage place.

The process begins online with an online survey open to everyone.

Participants can also provide ideas for activities to remember this heritage place. Public engagement is open from April 20 until May 22.

This information will help us understand what should be remembered about Abbot Pass Hut. Later this year a small working group will review the results of public engagement and make recommendations to Parks Canada about how to remember this special place. Abbot Pass Hut was a classified Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office (FHBRO) building.

It was also a national historic site designated by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) and part of an archaeological site associated with the national historic site.

Abbot Pass Hut was more than a building – it was an experience.

Parks Canada is interested in the whole heritage place. When we ask Canadians why this place mattered, we are asking about Abbot Pass Hut but also about the pass, the approaches to and from it, and the activities that took place there over time.

You can contribute even if you never visited Abbot Pass or Abbot Pass Hut.

Canadians are invited to visit LetsTalkMountainParks.ca to participate.

Online Survey – Tell us what mattered to you about Abbot Pass Heritage Place.

Note: Parks Canada is aware that a working group led by the Alpine Club of Canada intends to submit a development proposal for a new structure in place of Abbot Pass Hut.

Parks Canada has not yet received a formal application as of April 21. Future proposals may be informed by public engagement but will be considered separately from this engagement process.
