Area G now chicken friendly
Ladies and gentlemen, get your chicken on.
Residents in Electoral Area G in the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) can now raise chickens.
RDEK board of directors Dec. 2 unanimously approved Bylaw No. 2732, which allows for the keeping of up to six backyard hens for personal egg production on single family residential properties zoned R-1, R-1(A), R-1(C) and R-1 (MH) within Electoral Area G.
A public hearing was held Nov. 23 at the Edgewater Community Hall, with six people in attendance, not including the local RDEK board members and staff.
Two Edgewater residents expressed opposition, citing bylaw enforcement concerns, while another resident urged that people keep coops on their property.
One woman, also from Edgewater, said she strongly supports the bylaw, noting six chickens isn’t enough. Two letters of support were also received
